If you don’t know anything about tanning beds,
you might find it difficult to choose the right one.
But you don’t have to be an expert to sort through the
different names, specifications, and price ranges. All you need to know
are a few simple facts.
UVA and UVB Tanning Bed Lights
When evaluating a tanning bed, the first thing you want to check is the
kind of tanning bed bulbs it uses. There are two basic kinds of tanning
bed bulbs: a bulb that emits UVB and UVA light and a bulb that emits UVA
only.
If a tanning bed uses bulbs that emit both types of light, you will have
to spend a lot of time in it to get a tan. Generally, you’ll have to
have 3 to 5 sessions a week for more than a month to get a base tan.
If the tanning bed uses bulbs that emit UVA only, you’ll only need 3 to
5 session total, not each week, over about a month to get a base tan.
This means you’ll spend much less time in the tanning bed. It may also
mean that your session will cost a little more, but since you won’t need
as many sessions, you may save money as well as time.
Keeping Your Tan
It’s simple to get a tan; all you have to do is lie in the tanning bed
for a short time, get up, pay for it, and come back until you’ve
completed your sessions. Once you have a good tan, you might think that
it will last forever. The problem is that it won’t. Once you stop using
a tanning bed, your tan will begin to fade. This is also true if you get
your tan from lying on the beach. To maintain your tan, you’ll have to
go to a tanning salon every month for a session, so don’t forget to make
an appointment and put it on your calendar!
Tanning Precautions
To get a proper tan, all you need to know is the difference between UVA
and UVB bulbs and keep your appointments at your tanning saloon. To
reduce the danger UV rays pose to your skin, however, you must not stay
too long in a tanning bed. Remember that 25 minutes is the upper limit.
While you can generally trust the tanning saloon personnel, trust your
common sense first. Second, you should not use a tanning bed too often
or your skin will age more quickly and your chances of developing cancer
will increase. About 20 session a year might be tops, but you wouldn’t
want to do it for ten years, as it might prove dangerous. Third, you
should not treat a tanning bed as the solution to all your skin and
health problems. A tanning bed is only a device that produces artificial
sunlight.
